Why should you help?
Every child deserves LOVE!
Each year, We take a team of 15 family missionaries (including 6 of our own children) to a poverty-stricken Cree Indian Reservation in northern Saskatchewan, Canada where we minister & teach for a week to over 100 children & teenagers. This will be our 5th year (2008) and we anxiouly await our departure on July 18. We rely on donations to provide for the needs of our team and the Pelican Narrows community. The first comment we receive when we arrive is "Are you coming back next year?" Progress is definitely being made with every visit and we are becoming more of a family. The kids flock to us when we arrive in town and we can hardly get them to go home at the end of each day. The local pastor and his wife, Angus & Liza, spend as much time with us as possible, often staying with us to the wee hours of the morning. In 2007, we were able to be a part of the baptizing of 9 teenagers who pledged their lives to following Christ. What a blessing! Eyes are filled with sorrowful tears from our team and from the children when we leave. These kids are in need!!
Pelican Narrows is a desolate Cree Indian Reservation. There is one, long 30-mile dirt road connecting the reservation with the nearest town hospital and shopping. There are few jobs in this community so most of its residents rely on the Canadian Government to provide for their very basic needs. The winters are long and harsh in this remote community, averaging -20 to -40 below zero (before wind chills). Many don't survive these conditions. Their houses are small and run-down and grafitti marks each resident. Gangs storm the town and create problems every where you turn. Suicide runs rampant through the community including the devestating suidide of children. Many of the children have alcoholic parents at home who are unwilling to provide meals for their children. Often, children will gather berries in the fields to fill their stomachs for the day.
There's No Hope or Is There?
There's no hope for this community without the Good News. We must continue to share Christ's love in practical ways by providing meals, teaching them about the Bible, providing them with constructive craft activites & games, and most importantly providing love and affection which is very much missing from many of their lives.
